At Bubble Soap Co., we are always looking for ways to expand our natural, zero-waste personal care product range. One of our latest projects has been formulating a natural deodorant using tallow as a key ingredient, alongside Triethyl Citrate and Zinc Ricinoleate. It’s been an exciting and rewarding process — full of experimentation, learning, and a few challenges along the way.
Why Tallow for Deodorant?
Tallow is a powerhouse ingredient known for its skin-nourishing properties. It’s deeply moisturizing, packed with beneficial fatty acids, and an excellent natural deodorant base. Unlike synthetic ingredients, tallow works in harmony with the skin, making it an ideal choice for those seeking a gentle yet effective deodorant.
Key Ingredients and Their Benefits
Triethyl Citrate – A natural ester derived from citric acid that helps inhibit the enzymatic breakdown of sweat, which is what causes odor.
Zinc Ricinoleate – A powerful odor-absorbing ingredient derived from castor oil that helps neutralize body odor without blocking sweat glands.
Tallow – Provides deep hydration and creates a smooth, skin-loving texture while supporting the skin barrier.
Lemongrass Essential Oil – Offers a fresh, citrusy scent with natural antibacterial properties, making it a great addition for odor control.
The Challenges of Formulation
Formulating a tallow-based deodorant has been an engaging process, with texture and consistency being our biggest challenges.
Getting the Right Consistency: Finding the perfect balance between solid and spreadable has taken multiple trials. Tallow is naturally firm at cooler temperatures, so we’ve had to experiment with different ratios to achieve a smooth, easy-to-apply formula.
Absorption and Feel: A deodorant should be effective without feeling greasy or heavy on the skin. We’ve refined the formula to ensure it absorbs well while delivering long-lasting odour protection.
Scent and Essential Oils: We want our tallow deodorant to smell fresh but remain gentle on sensitive skin. We are testing different blends of essential oils, including lemongrass, that complement the formulation without irritating.
